What is a photo dumpand the two things it means

On Instagram it is a carousel of photos thrown together without much care, and that is exactly why people like it. But a photo dump is also something else, which comes first: the place where every photo of a day ends up, before anyone picks the ten to post.

Before you start

To dump means to unload, to tip out. A photo dump is therefore a tipping-out of photos: you pull them all out at once, without picking them one by one. The word became famous on Instagram around 2020, when carousels of random photos started replacing the single perfect shot. But the gesture, tipping every photo into one place, is older than the social network and holds outside it too.

The Instagram photo dump

It is a post with several photos and videos, to swipe through. Instagram allows up to twenty items in a single post. The unwritten rule of the photo dump is that the photos are not perfect: a glimpse, a blurry shot, a half-eaten plate, a screenshot of a chat. Whoever posts it tells a day or a week as a pile of memories, not as a shop window.

Why people like it: because it looks real. After years of curated feeds, the messy carousel says "here is how it actually went". The industry guides explain it well: Later describes it as a collection of photos and videos in one post, low-effort, conveying a mood more than a message; Buffer defines it as a casual, uncurated collection that shows a more authentic side of whoever posts it.

How to do it well

  1. A theme, even a vague one: a trip, a month, a person. Mess works if there is a thread.
  2. The first photo matters: it is the one that shows in the feed. The others can be ugly, the first cannot.
  3. Mix the formats: photos, a short video, a screenshot, a blurry shot. The rhythm comes from the change.
  4. Short caption, or none. A photo dump with an essay underneath stops being a photo dump.
  5. Do not exceed what a swiping thumb can take: ten items get looked at, twenty get skipped.

The other photo dump: the one that comes first

There is a problem the carousel does not solve: where you get the photos from. After a party, the photos of that night sit on twenty phones. Yours has your thirty; the other hundred belong to other people, compressed in the WhatsApp group or never sent. You make the Instagram photo dump with what you have, and what you have is a fraction.

The photo dump in the other sense is the gesture that comes before: everyone tips the photos of that day into one place, whole, and from there each person picks. That is what a shared gallery on Dumpbox does: a link or a QR, whoever was there uploads from the browser with no app and no account, the photos keep their original resolution, and whoever organises approves before anyone else sees them. The carousel, if you want one, you pick afterwards, from a hundred and thirty photos instead of thirty.

Before the carousel
Every photoin one place.

Twenty phones, one link. The ten for the carousel you pick later, with everything in front of you.

The two do not exclude each other: the shared gallery on Dumpbox is the collection, the photo dump on Instagram is the story. Many people do the second starting from the first.

05

The words around it

  • Carousel: Instagram's format with several items to swipe. A photo dump is a carousel; not every carousel is a photo dump.
  • Shared gallery, or shared album: a place where several people put photos. On iCloud and Google Photos it has its own conditions; on Dumpbox it is an event or a dump.
  • Dump, on its own: on Dumpbox it is the collection of photos of one moment, yours or a group's. Hence the name.
Where the promise stops

Dumpbox does not post to Instagram for you, and it is not a social network: there are no counters and no rankings. The collection is one thing; the story on social media is another, and it stays yours.

We are not a backup: the collection of one day does not replace the copies of your photos.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos go in an Instagram photo dump?
The technical limit is twenty per post. The practical one is ten: beyond that, whoever swipes gets tired before the end.
Does a photo dump have to include bad photos?
It does not have to, but it can. The point is that they are not chosen to be perfect; a blurry photo that tells something is worth more than a sharp one that tells nothing.
What is the difference from a shared gallery on Dumpbox?
The Instagram photo dump is public and selected, a few photos to tell a story. A shared gallery on Dumpbox is the whole collection, in high quality, seen only by the people you choose. The first is often made starting from the second.
